The only thing I remember doing was to dothe 'Automatic Updates' following which I rebooted my laptop. The description above by coreDump was very good - I also noticed today that the Caps-loc/Num-lock lights on the keyboard do not light up. Given how widespread this is (I'm running a netbook) maybe microsoft will come up with a fix. It does it in safe mode and in Clean Boot with non-Microsoft services disabled.
